@ciaranmartinoxf Empirically, over the last (say) 15 years some DDoS operations, Shamoon, Estonia 2007, HB Gary, maybe Diginotar (depending on OC definition, of course) have been more akin to OC benchmarks of their time. Examples not exhaustive, btw.
@RidT Taking the context at face value, the term signals wouldn’t generally be used. Bearers: yes. Channels: possibly. But that would depend also on the era of the technology. Do you have further context, including when the statement was made?
@RidT :-) yes, I got that. But probably like others I lament the hijacking specifically of “crypto” especially when the the cryptographic technique typically used in a cc core is such a limited subset of the cryptographic whole.
@RidT …while in a security (non-cryptanalytic) context crypt might refer to the algorithm - “it’s an interesting system but I’m not sure we’d trust the crypt.”
@RidT Thomas - there’s another subtlety here, though. On the slide crypt appears to be a shorthand for cryptanalysis, not cryptography. Crypto was (is?) used as a shorthand for cryptographic devices or techniques…
@RidT Yes, I agree. Acknowledging this complexity and nuance, something I’ve had in mind for a while is a taxonomy of integrity attacks. Something for your undergrads to consider, perhaps?
