Readiness is a tale boys tell themselves by the hearth. Men step into the storm first and sharpen their weapons on the march. The world does not ask whether you deserve to be strong for it is a cold anvil asking only what your strength will shape before the forge goes dark. The High One, Wotan and the Aesir are not watching to see if you simply win the day. They are watching only the worthy from their high halls to watch you struggle against your fate - do you fall or do you rise... do you flee? or do you fight?

You were not born a warrior, and you will not die one by the passing of years. Between those two winter nights of your birth and death lies your entire life. The only question that matters when the Norns wind your thread is whether, when the great wind takes everything else away, what remains standing has your name carved into it. That is the imperative, that is your fate.

Answer it, and understand whose voice you are answering. The imperative is not the chatter of the unworthy or the soft talk of the thralls. The crowd of people will never ask this of you because they want you pleasant, compliant, easily broken, and slightly ashamed of your own blood. They want you easy to trade with, easy to rule, and most of all easy to forget when the barrow is closed.

The imperative is older than the villages. It is the voice beneath the stone, the one that speaks in the small quiet hours before dawn when the longhouse is dark and the excuses have not yet stirred in a man. It is the voice that knows exactly which beast you are avoiding in the woods and has been waiting patiently for you to stop bargaining with your own shadow. Every man hears it, though most spend their lives learning how to drown it out with indulgences.

You will know when you have begun to answer it by the taste of your own days. The morning frost will feel different. Your reflection in the mirror will feel different. Not because you have become a hero overnight... No it is because you have stopped lying to the man looking back at you in the mirror.

There is a specific kind of quiet confidence that settles on a man who is doing what his wyrd demands of him. It is not the soft joy of merriment.. No, it is something older, harder, and bought with blood and suffering. The skalds of old call it drengr or the bearing of a man of worth. A man with such weight does not need to shout his own name for the very winds carries it for him.

One of the most important voices in the trying times we find ourselves in. Others call for mindless violence or revolution, no plan for afterwards. This is a call to restoration, to what we had and are loosing.

The moon was too full of bone light to be good for the night and the quick knife-work of stealth.

So he would fight them because there was nothing else that could take him forward to break of day, and over the walls of this cursed place of weaker men.

Arrows like the words of the eunuchs of this petty and pretty eastern city came at him from the dark, silent and hissing, sizzling like hot venom. He caught them with shield and kept moving, ignoring the fatigue and poison.

In the midnight alleys and dark passages he would force them to come for him and there he would make them pay dearly in spilt-blood, running dark as the shifting shadows in the bone-light.

He would fight them all, each and every one, and see the city at dawn from the high hills beyond its endless treacheries.

He was a warrior and so it would be this way.

He knew no other.

And he was not as lesser men… unwilling to fight, keep moving forward… taking victory, and all its spoils.

Living free.
Living wild.

Living.
