@greenmellonade Yeah the tool gets used first then it breaks the block, so if your pick breaks it'll see you're not using a tool when you break the block. Also your assessment about furnaces is 100% correct.

pittsburgh teens just picked me up and put me in a big cauldron in the middle of market square. now they're taking turns cutting up vegetables to throw in.
Soil now tracks the nutrient content and the moisture, I should probably add an indicator to the soil texture to show when it's moist/dry.
Moisture goes down when it's not near water (currently must be adjacent) or raining.
Nutrients will go down per day when a crop is growing
No game screenshot today but I did make the models for the two initial seed types, wrote the logic for crops growing and the soil nutrients/moisture along with the saving and loading for those and rewrote a bunch of code related to item state so it can store additional info.
