This is not a new claim. Trump said the identical thing about Detroit in 2020, more votes than people, and NBC News fact checked it the same week. Detroit had roughly six hundred seventy thousand residents and two hundred fifty thousand ballots were cast.

The actual documented discrepancy from that year was roughly four hundred fifty votes out of balance across the county, in an election decided by a hundred fifty-four thousand vote margin, explained by mundane things like voters leaving lines or ballots getting scanned twice. A Republican chaired state Senate committee spent months investigating and concluded the certified results were accurate. Even Trump's own Justice Department sent Wayne County a demand letter for records this spring and could only point to three total fraud cases out of millions of votes cast, and Michigan officials said those were not even connected to a recent election.

This claim is getting revived now, right after a Democrat won Michigan's Senate primary and months before the general election Wayne County will help decide.
