Those “eyes” aren’t eyes at all. They’re spots on the Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar that help deter insects, birds and other predators. Found primarily east of the Mississippi River, you can spot them in wooded areas, swamps and gardens.

The Golden-Line Barbel (Sinocyclocheilus furcodorsalis) in a cave waterway. The species is depigmented, blind, and has both a duck-billed mouth as well as a couple of “horns” protruding from its forehead – truly alien in appearance compared to surface fish - south China.
