I don’t understand why some people take issue with the idea of Islamic banking. When you lend someone money, you give up the opportunity to use or invest it yourself. That creates an opportunity cost in that you forgo potential returns while inflation (every year) erodes the purchasing power of the money you eventually get back.

An interest-free loan may benefit the borrower, but that doesn’t make it cost-free for the lender. Their money is tied up, and inflation can unexpectedly spike to 9%, as it did during the pandemic. What is the lender supposed to do then, simply absorb the loss in purchasing power?

Why shouldn’t there be a Sharia-compliant way to compensate someone for providing capital without resorting to conventional interest? The question should be how to structure that compensation fairly and within Islamic principles, not whether Islamic banking should exist at all.
