In the speech of Iryna Kozikava, sister of Maksim Znak, the words resonated: “No correspondence, no visits, no phone calls, no lawyer,” reflecting the tragic reality for those who defend human rights in Belarus.
57th session of the UN Human Rights Council a joint statement was made by the Belarusian Association of Human Rights Lawyers (BAHRL), IBAHRI, International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), The Law Society of England and Wales, Lawyers for Lawyers and Lawyers Rights Watch Canada.
We call for an end to the harassment of lawyers in Belarus.
Lawyers Maksim Znak, Aliaksandr Danilevich, Anastasia Lazarenka, Vitaly Braginets, Yulia Yurgilevich, and Aliaksei Borodko have been unlawfully convicted for their legal activities and should be immediately released.
The Belarusian Association of Human Rights Lawyers stands in solidarity and believes in his eventual release. Listen to his music and learn about the play based on his book here: https://t.co/UntnFRf07Z and https://t.co/nZdWvguTQ3
Today is Maksim Znak's birthday, a symbol of courage and resilience. On September 6, 2021, he was sentenced to 10 years for his human rights work. Maksim remains in prison, completely isolated since February 2023. Despite this, he continues to inspire with his unwavering spirit.
“Despite all the dictatorship’s repression, #Belarus lawyers have not given up. They are continuing to fight from exile. They deserve protection and support.”

Embroidery about the lawyer Maksim Znak as part of the #framedinbelarus project! The embroidery tells the story of Maksim, who has been incommunicado for over a year!
The goal of the #framedinbelarus project is to create portraits of all those unjustly convicted using traditional Belarusian embroidery techniques, with red thread on a white background, thereby capturing an important era in Belarusian history through folk patterns.
