This is why I'm so adamant about preserving the artistic direction of a game, and why remakes and remasters almost always miss the mark in a hundred little ways that add up to a different picture entirely.
I think what people especially writers in modern gaming do not understand is that the funny comedic dialogue and banter wasn't a supplement for having a personality.
OG gears characters had charm, good writing, and in some cases were stereotypes (Cole Train being the loudmouth showoff sports player for example) which makes them loveable and endearing.
Coletrain is easily one of my favorite characters of all time. The whole original squad is loveable, I remember how hard it hit for me and my friend playing through Gears 2 for dom. And especially in 3 when he dies.
These are characters, not caricatures. You need to have an actual written character to have snarky jokes and comedic writing to come off as realistic.
