As Polish pilots fell in battle — or in the sudden cruelties of accident — it was often a young British wife who carried the other half of the loss.

Flying Officer Tadeusz Kolecki of the famed 303 Squadron married Ethel A. Clarke in wartime Blackpool, a brief moment of light for them in the long shadow of war.

On 14 September 1943, returning from a Ramrod operation, he was tragically killed.

Two hearts bound by destiny, parted by war.💔

On the harbour wall at Ballyhalbert, Co. Down is a poem by Belfast-based writer Frank Ormsby. It stands only a stone's throw away from where Polish Squadrons took off and landed at the nearby airfield.
