Four elite SOG officers among five killed in Mandera roadside bomb attack

A routine security patrol in Mandera County ended in tragedy after five security personnel were killed in a deadly roadside bomb attack on Tuesday.

The incident happened in the Arabia area when a vehicle carrying the officers reportedly drove over a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that had been planted along the main supply route.

The powerful explosion destroyed the vehicle, leaving no survivors.

The victims included four officers from the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) and one National Police Reservist (NPR).

Local authorities said the officers were carrying out their normal patrol duties when the attack occurred.

Following the explosion, security agencies quickly sent reinforcements to the area and launched an operation to track down those responsible.

The attackers are believed to have escaped toward the nearby border shortly after the blast.

Officials have not confirmed who carried out the attack, and no group had claimed responsibility at the time of reporting.

However, Mandera County has experienced similar incidents in the past, with suspected Al-Shabaab militants frequently targeting security officers, public roads, and other key infrastructure near the Kenya-Somalia border.

The latest attack adds to the security challenges that continue to face the region despite ongoing operations aimed at improving safety.

Security teams have maintained a strong presence in parts of Mandera because of repeated threats from armed groups operating across the border.

Mandera County security officials confirmed the deaths and said investigations are underway to establish how the explosive device was planted and identify those behind the attack.

They added that more details will be released as investigations continue.

The deaths of the five officers are a major loss to the country's security agencies, highlighting the dangers faced by personnel deployed in areas affected by cross-border insecurity.

Authorities are expected to strengthen security patrols and surveillance in the area to prevent similar attacks and protect both security officers and local residents.
