The deepfake problem may be growing, but there are reasons to be hopeful: Earlier this month, the US Senate unanimously approved the TAKE IT DOWN Act!
The Act, which would criminalize the publication of non-consensual explicit deepfakes, and necessitate social media platforms have procedures to remove such content within 48 hours of its flagging, is certainly a step in the right direction.
However, legislators must hold liable all those involved with the deepfake supply chain: from production, to distribution, and the developers behind the programs used to make deepfakes.
