Reforming India's Defense Industry | Vol 1| ISSUE 6: Concerts in Abode of Clouds: The rise of Shillong as an Epicentre for International Concerts by @Banshantweets
" In the 1990s, the local concerts and fetes brought the community together long before corporate sponsorships or high-tech sound systems existed. Popular local bands like King Apple, Revel Soul, and Lou Majaw would perform on makeshift stages in school playgrounds or community fields, driven purely by passion." --Banshanlang Marwein
The author traces Shillong’s emergence as a global live-music hub, which is not incidental but rooted in a long-standing cultural ecosystem shaped by history, community, and grassroots creativity. Sustained state investment, global exposure, and local musical traditions have transformed music from a passion into an economic and cultural force, one that now demands careful, sustainable governance to balance growth with identity.

Reforming India's Defence Industry, Vol. 1, Issue 6: Concerts in the Abode of Clouds: The Rise of Shillong as an Epicentre for International Concerts by Banshanlang Marwein @Banshantweets
High in the hills of Meghalaya, Shillong has quietly become the heartbeat of India’s live music movement. From church choirs and local fetes in the 1990s to Ed Sheeran playing before 30,000 fans in 2025, the city’s journey reflects decades of musical devotion. Major international acts—from Bryan Adams and Akon to Scorpions and Ne-Yo—have all taken the stage here, drawn by spirited crowds and a culture where music is a way of life and a voice for social stories and emotions.
Backed by government initiatives and heavy investment in a “Concert Economy,” Meghalaya is building an ecosystem where festivals, tourism, and local talent grow together. Yet questions remain: how can Shillong safeguard its heritage, avoid over-commercialisation, and build a sustainable, full-fledged music industry for the future?

I strongly condemned the vandalisation of the bust of U Tirot Sing Syiem, the braveheart of Khasi Hills and freedom fighter of Meghalaya at the Indian Cultural Centre in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Urge local authorities to take corrective measures to avoid further escalation.

Dear Bengalaru India, I was so looking forward to performing in your amazing city but due to technical issues we’ve been forced to cancel both shows.
We tried everything but because the audience can’t hear the comedians on stage there’s literally no way to do a show. We’ll make sure all ticket holders receive a full refund and again I’m so sorry for both the inconvenience and disappointment this has never happened to us before. 🙏🏽
