Reading people is an essential skill for business, but it's also one of the hardest parts of it.

Business and leadership strategist Wilson Luna shares a guide to reading anyone in minutes. It's not as easy as it sounds, but if you put your attention in the right places, anyone can do it.

It starts when you walk into a meeting. Are you thinking about what you're going to say or how you're going to make your pitch? Or are you thinking about the mood of the people in the room, the communication leading up to the meeting, the personality traits you've gleaned about each individual?

If you chose the latter, you have an advantage. It's a lot to think about at once, but if you think holistically about the people you're working with, you'll have a better chance of connecting with them.

It goes beyond physical meetings. When and how you send an email should depend on what you know about the other person's email habits. Should it be concise? Should it wait until Monday when they're more active?

Eventually, as you gather individual data points about a person, you start to build a mental map of their behavior. You can use that map to guide your interactions with them.

The takeaway: be a better listener and observer. Then you can become the most influential person in the room.
