Un percepteur d'impôts a construit le plus grand chantier d'ingénierie du XVIIe siècle. Seul. Avec son propre argent.

Canal du Midi, de Toulouse à la Méditerranée. 240 kilomètres. 63 écluses. 126 ponts. 55 aqueducs. Un tunnel de 173 mètres creusé sous une colline, le premier tunnel navigable d'Europe.

Pierre-Paul Riquet a 58 ans. Il est fermier général de la gabelle en Languedoc, collecteur d'impôts pour le roi. En 1662, il présente à Colbert un projet que personne ne croit réalisable : relier l'Atlantique à la Méditerranée par un canal.

Le problème, c'est l'eau. Au point le plus haut du tracé, le seuil de Naurouze, il faut alimenter le canal en permanence. Les Romains avaient renoncé. Riquet trouve la solution dans la Montagne Noire : un réseau de rigoles qui capte les eaux de ruissellement sur 70 kilomètres.

12 000 ouvriers pendant 14 ans. Riquet y engloutit sa fortune personnelle.

Il meurt le 1er octobre 1680, ruiné, six mois avant l'inauguration. Il n'a jamais vu un seul bateau naviguer sur son canal.
