For five years, we traversed the American West, documenting the roundups conducted by the Bureau of Land Management. We watched as pregnant mares and newborn foals were driven by choppers they couldn’t outrun, we witnessed stallions trying valiantly to protect their families.

The journey of creating WILD BEAUTY: MUSTANG SPIRIT OF THE WEST immersed us in a wildness we must protect; while simultaneously driving us into the darkness of the slaughter pipeline. Our crew went undercover - wearing button cameras sewn into our shirts, to take a crucial but devastating look at the government-enabled cruelty and abject tragedy of this issue.

This is an unreleased trailer for WILD BEAUTY, that we hope will stir you to action. But the reality is - wild horses, right along with domestic equines - from show jumpers, to off-the-track Thoroughbreds, discarded lesson ponies, even donkeys - are thrown away into the slaughter pipeline every year.

The Wild Beauty Foundation is leading The Lost Horses campaign to pass the SAFE Act in Congress, and to end the slaughter of American horses at home and across our borders for good. Alongside our coalition partners, we have successfully secured core SAFE Act protections in the bipartisan BUILD America 250 transportation bill, which advanced out of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and is now awaiting consideration on the House floor.

A dead dog is hanging over the shelter fence after apparently trying to escape and possibly getting stuck. (it may have died in the shelter and been thrown there but there is evidence on social media of dogs scaling the fencing to try to escape).

One dog is dead on the ground. Staff have not noticed or do not care. Dead dogs are routinely left and are eaten by the other dogs.

This is the disgusting reality of local authority run dog shelters in Turkey. Nothing but torture chambers #Turkey

A petition is urging Congress to preserve federal protections for wild horses and donkeys under the Bureau of Land Management’s care.

A proposed federal budget would reduce funding for the Wild Horse and Burro Program by about $37 million and omit longstanding restrictions on killing healthy animals or selling them for slaughter.

Supporters warn the changes could put tens of thousands of animals at risk. They are calling on Congress to preserve the restrictions and fund nonlethal methods, including fertility control.

He Was the Only One of 136,000 Australian War Horses to Come Home.

During the First World War, Australia sent around 136,000 horses overseas to serve alongside its troops. They carried soldiers, hauled guns and supplies, and endured some of the harshest conditions of the conflict.

Of all those horses, only one is known to have returned to Australia.

His name was Sandy.

Sandy was a powerful Australian Waler and the favourite charger of Major General Sir William Bridges, commander of the 1st Australian Division. Bridges was mortally wounded at Gallipoli in May 1915, but Sandy survived and continued his wartime service.

When the war eventually drew to its end, bringing Australia's horses home was considered impractical and prohibitively expensive. Thousands were sold, transferred to other armies, or otherwise left overseas.

For the Australian soldiers who had lived, worked, and sometimes survived because of these animals, leaving them behind could be heartbreaking.

But Sandy was given an extraordinary exception.

In May 1918, he was transported from Calais to England, where arrangements were eventually made for his return. He sailed for Australia aboard the freighter Booral and arrived in Melbourne in November 1918.

Of approximately 136,000 Australian horses sent overseas during the war, Sandy became the only one known to make the journey home.

He spent his final years at the Remount Depot at Maribyrnong in Victoria, becoming a living reminder of the countless Australian horses that never returned.

By 1923, Sandy's health had deteriorated considerably. He was almost completely blind and was put down in May of that year.

Sandy could never have understood why his fate was so different from that of the thousands of horses that had served alongside him.

To him, there was simply another ship, another journey, and eventually familiar Australian soil beneath his feet again.

But to the soldiers who had left their horses behind, Sandy represented something much greater.

He became a symbol of the animals that carried men into battle, hauled ammunition and supplies, suffered through heat, mud, hunger and exhaustion, and remained beside their handlers through some of the worst conditions imaginable.

136,000 Australian war horses went overseas.

Sandy was the only one to come home.
