Morocco is not an ally of Israel. It is a country with which Israel maintains pragmatic relations, much like Egypt or Jordan, while remaining firmly in the pro-Palestinian camp. It has supported every anti-Israel UN resolution since 2015, routinely condemns Israel, and 89% of Moroccans reject normalization.

Spain under Sánchez is not an ally either. But Spain is a fellow Western democracy with a real pro-Israel constituency. These Spaniards are overwhelmingly on the right, despise Sánchez, and include prominent figures such as Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the President of Madrid.

Danny Danon did not attack Sánchez. By questioning Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla, accusing Spain of colonialism and echoing Morocco’s territorial narrative, he attacked Spanish statehood and insulted every Spanish patriot.

And therefore he disproportionately alienated precisely the Spaniards most sympathetic to Israel. The anti-Israel left may even agree with his colonial framing — but it will not hate Israel any less because of it.

Danon inserted himself into a matter that did not concern him, insulted an entire nation, alienated Israel’s friends in Spain and left the Israeli embassy in Madrid to clean up his mess.

The only winner was Pedro Sánchez. Danon handed him ammunition for his anti-Israel propaganda and the perfect opportunity to divert attention from the government failure that produced the crisis in the first place.
