US scraps UN free speech declaration after insufficient support

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the Trump administration sought to promote international free speech protections. However, the event was cancelled after too few countries committed to signing the declaration.

Britain was among the countries that failed to attend the signing ceremony. The declaration denounced “new laws” and “regulatory frameworks” that endanger free speech.

It is clear that the UK and the EU objected to the document because it conflicts with their censorious online regimes, including the Online Safety Act and the EU’s Digital Services Act. Governments would have been required to agree that online platforms should not be forced to “proactively moderate content” falling within certain categories of speech.

Sarah Rogers, the US Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, said: “The statement is intended as an expression of comity and common values, and also a source of interpretive guidance for American speech companies complying with overseas laws.”

A State Department spokesman said that the draft joint statement was “undergoing an iterative diplomatic process”, adding: “The purpose of this effort is to drive consensus, provide clarity and express shared values. By its terms, the statement does not purport to override existing laws or regulations.”

It is deeply disappointing that countries around the world cannot commit to defending one of our most basic rights.

The world is in the grip of a free speech crisis.

A father of two children has been jailed after throwing a plastic bottle at the police and swearing at officers during the illegal migrant protest in Portsmouth.

Sentenced to a two year prison sentence.

The judge said it would act 'as a deterrent'

Now, let me be abundantly clear.

I do not believe that any violence against the police is acceptable.

I also do not believe that a two year prison sentence is appropriate, particularly when we are allowing paedophiles and rapists to roam our streets because of a supposed lack of prison capacity.

The BBC reports the man 'said he had found the bottle on the ground and was going to throw it into a nearby bush, but was angry and so threw it up into the air.'

Reportedly, he told the officers to 'f*** off' and 'pointed aggressively' at them (ITV).

I can understand the anger, to be honest. This was happening as illegal migrants were being ferried into his town.

This sentence is unfair, unjust and morally wrong.

Let's be honest about what has happened here.

The establishment is making an example of this man to deter others from protesting.

A two year sentence is absolutely outrageous - there are far better ways for him to make right the wrong.

The third world invaders are greeted to luxury accommodation as heroes, yet this man will rot in prison.

It's not right.

The New York Times reports that a Democratic-aligned group, Project Bullhorn, paid more than 100 creators through SideShift to flood social media with “affordability” content ahead of the 2026 midterms.

$25–$30 PER VIDEO.

Many didn’t disclose they were being paid. Some weren’t even from the states they claimed to represent. One Utah resident posed as a Texan, while a creator in England claimed to be from Texas.

And remember how every time you opened TikTok, it felt like “affordability” videos had completely taken over your feed?
