[BREAKING] A federal judge in MO just halted part of @POTUS's SAVE student loan repayment plan.
@usedgov may no longer cancel debt for borrowers via the new rules.
Millions continue to qualify for lower payments and a break on unpaid interest-- for now.

New: @CFPB is suing student-loan company PHEAA, accusing it of illegally collecting payments from borrowers whose loans were already discharged in bankruptcy.
160,000 borrowers will soon learn that their student debt has been approved for cancellation through my Administration's actions.
Education should never be a barrier to opportunity.
And I will never stop working to cancel debt, despite Republican officials' attempts to stop us.
🧵/ According to the Education Department, today's measure brings the total amount of approved federal student loan forgiveness to $167 billion for nearly 5 million borrowers. Roughly one in 10 borrowers have qualified for some form of debt relief under president Biden.

I'm working on a story about loan default rates and want to better gauge general knowledge + experience with defaulting.
That being said, do you know what loan default is?
Why did buy now, pay later loans and apps seemingly explode out of nowhere and why are consumers so drawn to them?
I dug deep into BNPL usage to better understand the average American consumer and what this trend tells us about the future of lending.

5/ As of now, no action is needed from those who suspect they've been harmed by illegal collection practices.
In the meantime, borrowers can be on the lookout for new information on the status of the order from Portfolio Recovery Associates or from the CFPB.
🧵/Today, the @CFPB charged debt collection agency, Portfolio Recovery Associates, with numerous violations against the Fair Credit Reporting Act. It was also found guilty of violating its CFPB order from 2015. Here's what this means:
4/ The court has yet to publicly announce the status of this proposal; if accepted, qualifying borrowers likely won't be receiving a restitution payment for a little while.
3/ If the CFPB's proposal is ordered, Portfolio Recovery Associates will be on the hook for over $12 million in damages to impacted borrowers. It will also be required to deposit $12 million into the CFPB's victims relief fund.
