Dave Grohl played drums on "No One Knows" and on most of Queens of the Stone Age's 2002 album Songs for the Deaf, as the band did not have a permanent drummer at the time.

The song became Queens of the Stone Age's biggest hit, reaching #1 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart (their only song to top the chart), #5 on Mainstream Rock Airplay, #51 on the US Billboard Hot 100, #15 on the UK Singles Chart, and #1 in Australia's Triple J Hottest 100 of 2002. It also won the 2003 Kerrang! Award for Best Single and received a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance.

Mick Jagger wrote the lyrics to "Sympathy For The Devil" practically alone, inspired by the book The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov (which his girlfriend Marianne Faithfull gave him).

The famous "woo-woo" of backing vocals was born when Anita Pallenberg (Keith's girlfriend) spontaneously released into the studio, soon Marianne Faithfull, Brian Jones and everyone joined the choir.

"Mr. Jones" is autobiographical. Adam Duritz wrote the song in 1992 inspired by a real night when he and his friend David Jones (a bass player) were drinking, playing the guitar and fantasizing about becoming famous. Adam sang "I wanna be Bob Dylan" and the two imagined what life would be like as rock stars.

The track was released as the lead single from their debut album August and Everything After (1993) and placed Counting Crows in the mainstream worldwide almost overnight. Adam even said that the lyrics became a giant irony: he sang about wanting fame before he had it, and suddenly he was living exactly what he dreamed of.
