It is fun to have a five-year-old, like Poppy, who is excited and happy to have her portrait painted. Mary Cassatt famously said, "I love to paint children. They are so natural and truthful." I can't agree more.

I added side light flowing through the orchid which gives this painting a special feeling of sunlight and makes the orchid come to life.
Orchid & Sunshine is currently on display at Beverly McNeil Gallery in Birmingham, Alabama.

On a gentle summer afternoon as Judi and I ambled gently through her garden, she seemed the most relaxed and peaceful. This is where she was at ease
surrounded by her flowers and trees. Her smile said it all.

Eliza was a joy to paint! We played LEGO’s to get to know one another, sharing conversation and ideas. The relaxed play time and focus shows through in her expression.

Paintings of pets with children often capture themes of companionship, innocence, and joy, but the pets don’t always want to cooperate!
Placing the dog in a relaxing position within the portrait on the couch was a good option, the family was happy, so was I.
The whole time I am sketching and photographing a child, I ask them a lot of questions and discussideas with them.
If you can engage with children, they will give you a few moments of focus and connection that is wonderful to capture.

This is Casey—an oil on canvas using a limited palette.
Richard Schmid mastered this monochromatic portrait style, calling them "portrait sketches" that appear effortless and gentle. The key, he believed, was to stop early; freshness is the golden ingredient!
The Star of the Show
Duncan is the youngest of four with three older sisters. He is adored by his siblings and runs the show; his confidence shines brightly in his portrait. https://t.co/bY97zy0Ld3
Evy’s parents describe her as their happiest child, always smiling. A smile is a special kind of sunshine; it brightens everyone’s day and reminds us of the simple things in life that bring happiness. Wishing everyone great happiness in the New Year!!

Kobe on the Beach in Coronado
We are so honored to announce that our beloved rescue Doberman, Kobe, was chosen to be featured in the California Art Club’s “From Sea to Sierra” art show.

When I was a child, we always had a bouquet of roses on the table. In California it seemed like they grew all year long. My dad would come home from work and relax by trimming and tending his roses. He loved variety and knew the names and history of each

Combining the beauty of nature and the subject of the portrait, you can create a harmonious image where the subject is integrated with, rather than simply placed in front of their surroundings

There is a trend now, with a minimal approach that focuses only on the child’s face and hair. Sometimes less is more, simple can be quite enchanting.
Sometimes we’re forced into doing something that we normally wouldn’t do, like painting a blonde child with a white shirt on a white background. It’s nice to sometimes push yourself out of your comfort zone. Just go ahead and dive in and do it

Charcoal's inherent ability to create strong contrasts between light and dark adds a dramatic and captivating quality.
