🎉 Congratulations to our Chair, Prof. Chantal Mathieu, on receiving the Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes Award!
This well-deserved recognition celebrates her outstanding international impact in diabetes care, research, advocacy, and policy.
Through her leadership in initiatives such as @EDENT1FI and @Innodiagroup, Prof. Mathieu continues to champion collaboration to advance earlier detection, better treatment, and stronger diabetes policies across Europe and beyond.💙
As she says: “Unity makes strength.”
Following his recent passing, she dedicated the award to Bastian Hauck, founder of #dedoc°, whose advocacy left a lasting mark on the diabetes community.

👉 Europe’s health checks must move beyond fragmented care.
In our last post, we highlighted why Europe needs early screening for type 1 diabetes and inherited lipid disorders in children - and why this should be reflected in the upcoming Council Recommendation on health checks.
We have also submitted a protocol calling for integrated adult health checks across cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic conditions. 🩺
Too often, these diseases are treated in isolation, despite being closely interconnected and frequently occurring together. This fragmented approach leads to missed opportunities for earlier detection, prevention, and more effective care.
Our adult protocol supports a more coordinated approach that can:
✅ Identify risks earlier
✅ Prevent serious complications
✅ Improve long-term health outcomes
✅ Reduce pressure on healthcare systems
If Europe is serious about prevention under the EU Safe Hearts Plan, integrated care must become the norm - at every stage of life.

Yesterday, our Executive Director, Bart Torbeyns, participated in the panel discussion “From Evidence to Action: Scaling Integrated Screening for Health System Resilience” alongside the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva.
The discussion focused on the newly launched policy paper:
📘 “Detect Earlier, Treat Better: Integrating health checks to improve cardio-renal-metabolic outcomes.”
The paper outlines a practical roadmap to help countries reduce disease burden, improve population health, and strengthen health system sustainability through:
➡️ integrated care
➡️ accessible health checks
➡️ stronger healthcare systems
Together with fellow panellists, Bart explored how integrated cardio-renal-metabolic screening can support earlier detection, improve outcomes, and build more resilient health systems across Europe and beyond.

🌍 This week, the European Diabetes Forum had the pleasure of participating in the MedTech Forum in Stockholm, organised by @medtecheurope.
It was a valuable opportunity to listen to insightful discussions and engage in meaningful conversations about the future of the medical devices sector — and healthcare more broadly.
We were also pleased to visit the IHI stand and see the poster on @EDENT1FI - an IHI project focused on the early detection of type 1 diabetes through a pan-European open platform aiming to screen 200,000 children and adolescents for T1D. 👏
Thank you to MedTech Europe for several inspiring days of exchange, learning and collaboration. 🤝
Heart disease, kidney disease & diabetes are deeply interconnected — yet often screened separately.
At #DevexImpactHouse @ WHA, global health leaders explored how integrated screening and earlier detection can strengthen health systems.

🔍 Early detection in focus
Today, our Executive Director @BartTorbeyns joined the event “Towards comprehensive cardiovascular health checks across Europe”, hosted by MEP @AurelijusVeryga.
The discussion highlighted the growing momentum behind health checks and the upcoming Council Recommendation - aimed at strengthening early detection of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.
💡 Key takeaway: prevention works.
From national best practices to lived patient experiences, the message was clear - health checks empower people to take action and access the care they need.
Bart emphasised the importance of comprehensive cardio-renal-metabolic screening, noting that many people live with multiple conditions. For those with diabetes, early detection of cardiovascular risk is critical.
👉 Knowing your numbers can make all the difference - supporting timely intervention, lifestyle changes, treatment, and better outcomes.
Thank you to MEP @AurelijusVeryga, @EFPIA and EACH for this important and timely discussion.
🤝 Let’s work together to ensure the upcoming Recommendation delivers clear and comprehensive guidance, so that early detection becomes a reality across the whole EU.
This week, our Board Member Prof. Carine de Beaufort joined the closing event of the PERFECTO project, speaking on the panel: “What’s next: outcomes, recommendations, mobilisation and implementation?”
💡 PERFECTO has played a key role in advancing systematic screening for inherited lipid disorders across Europe, with a strong focus on social, behavioural, and policy drivers.
🗣️ During the discussion, Prof. de Beaufort highlighted a crucial message: prevention starts early. She emphasised the importance of childhood and family-centred approaches, early detection of lipid disorders and diabetes, and the need to support families and health systems together to protect children.
👏 Thank you to FH Europe for hosting such an insightful and forward-looking event!
🏆 We're proud to announce Prof. Anette Ziegler as the recipient of the 58th EASD Claude Bernard Prize: the highest honour our association bestows. Her career has been driven by 1 vision: a world w/out #T1D. Join us in celebrating her at #EASD2026.

Yesterday, our Executive Director @BartTorbeyns joined a timely and important discussion on “The Promise of Cardiometabolic Health Checks”, organised by @EFPIA.
Alongside Ulrich Janssen, Cecilia Linde, and Victoria Tzouma, the panel explored how health checks can:
👉 prevent cardiometabolic diseases
👉 enable earlier detection
👉 reduce complications and mortality
👉 lower healthcare costs
👉 support economic productivity
👉 and improve health equity
The upcoming EU protocol on health checks under the Safe Hearts Plan is a major opportunity to invest in prevention and improve the health of people across Europe.
As Bart highlighted, health checks must be:
✔️ easy to implement in primary care
✔️ accessible to the general population
✔️ designed to identify risk early
He also presented a proposal for joint health check protocol developed by EUDF together with partners from the cardiovascular, renal, diabetes, and obesity communities.
We hope to see this reflected in the European Commission’s proposal.

On Saturday, @BartTorbeyns, our Executive Director, took part in the International Diabetes Federation Europe (IDF-Europe) TEAM meeting - centered around a powerful theme: Together Everyone Achieves More 🤝
Bart highlighted the strong collaboration EUDF has built with IDF-Europe experts over the years across key areas such as:
🔹 Data & digital health
🔹 Integrated care
🔹 AI and optimal use of technology
🔹 Disease-modifying therapies
🔹 The link between diabetes & obesity
🔹 Early detection of diabetes
🌍 He also announced the launch of the EUDF Country Ambassador Policy Network, a major step forward in supporting the implementation of the EU Safe Hearts Plan.
As Bart emphasised during the meeting:
👉 “We need all hands on deck - collaboration is key across all diabetes stakeholders, as well as with the cardiovascular, obesity, and renal communities.”
A big thank you to IDF-Europe for an insightful and inspiring meeting, and for the opportunity to showcase EUDF and our growing network 🙌
Last December, the European Commission published its Cardiovascular Health Plan – the EU Safe Hearts Plan.
The Plan focuses on prevention, early detection, and treatment of #cardiovascular disease, #diabetes, and #obesity - conditions that are deeply interconnected.
This creates a unique opportunity to move towards a more integrated, patient-centred approach to cardiometabolic health.
If implemented effectively, the Safe Hearts Plan could significantly improve the lives of millions of Europeans at risk or living with these conditions.
👉 Now is the time for national stakeholders to mobilise and ensure strong, ambitious implementation across all EU Member States.
📊 Take a look at our infographic below to explore the key pillars of the Plan and its potential to strengthen diabetes and cardiometabolic care.
