Iran is not a talking point.
Iran is not a “counter-narrative”
Beautifully said brother, thank you for this. A lot of Journalists need to hear this.

Sky News’ @SkyYaldaHakim asks an Israeli military spokesperson about the dozens of Iranian women and children the Israeli forces killed in recent days in Iran.
There are well known divisions and cleavages in Iranian society. If Israel had limited itself to hitting nuclear sites, military bases, and regime officials solely, they may have been able to navigate these divisions in a constructive manner. Instead, from the first day they decided to carry out massive attacks against civilians in urban areas, including central parts of Tehran. They carried these out evidently not caring greatly if they kill their targets, their families, or random neighbors and passers-by in the process. Accordingly, hundreds of people are already dead and many more wounded who had nothing to do with this situation and will be marked for life by these brazen actions.
Israeli officials meanwhile are boasting about “burning” the capital city of Iran with no sense of awareness of how Iranians and others may perceive that. They appear to be quite proud of specially bombing famous areas of Tehran and making them look the way that they have made Gaza City appear. This is sick and irrational behavior that doesn’t even comport with any identifiable political logic. It is rapidly earning them the undying hatred of a population that had previously been of mixed opinion, or even more polarized against their own government.
Israel only has one mode at this point which is eradication and supremacy. I highly doubt it’s possible to live in a region with such a country indefinitely or with people who are this far gone perceiving how their own actions are viewed by others. The lesson every other capable state should draw is to discard any prior notion of compromise and achieve the maximum deterrence possible at any cost, no less than it would have been necessary to contain and roll back Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, or any other of the radical genocidal states the world had been cursed to contend with in the past century.
Better translation:
“Trump, I don’t much care for traveling to the U.S.—it’s a bit dull—but I confess there are meritorious things there. I enjoy visiting the Black neighborhoods of Washington. There, I witnessed an outright battle in the capital of the U.S. between Blacks and Latinos, with barricades, which struck me as sheer stupidity, because they ought to unite.
I confess I admire Walt Whitman, Paul Simon, Noam Chomsky, and [Henry] Miller.
I confess that Sacco and Vanzetti—who share my blood—are unforgettable figures in U.S. history, and I follow their legacy. They were murdered, executed in the electric chair for being labor leaders, by the fascists who reside within the U.S., just as they do in my own country.
I despise your oil, Trump—it will destroy the human species through greed. Perhaps one day, over a glass of whiskey (which I’ll accept despite my gastritis), we might speak frankly about this. But it’s difficult, because you consider me an inferior race—and I am not, nor is any Colombian.
So if you know someone stubborn, that someone is me, period. You may wield your economic power and arrogance to attempt a coup d’état, as was done with Allende. But I will die by my own code: I resisted torture, and I resist you. I want no slavers near Colombia—we’ve had enough and freed ourselves from them. What I want beside Colombia are lovers of liberty. If you cannot stand with me, I will go elsewhere. Colombia is the heart of the world, and you failed to understand this. This is the land of yellow butterflies, of Remedios’ beauty, but also of Colonel Aureliano Buendía—of whom I am one, perhaps the last.
You may kill me, but I will survive in my people, who existed long before yours, in the Americas. We are peoples of the winds, the mountains, the Caribbean Sea, and freedom.
You dislike our freedom—fine. I will not shake hands with white slavers. I shake the hands of white libertarians, heirs to Lincoln, and the Black and white farm boys of the U.S., at whose tombs I wept and prayed on a battlefield I reached after trekking through the mountains of Italian Tuscany and surviving COVID.
They are the U.S., and before them I kneel—before no one else.
Bring me down, Mr. President, and the Americas and humanity will answer you.
Colombia now ceases to gaze northward; it looks to the world. Our blood flows from the blood of the Caliphate of Córdoba—the pinnacle of civilization in its time—and from the Latin Romans of the Mediterranean, who founded the republic and democracy in Athens. Our blood carries the resistance of Blacks enslaved by your kind. In Colombia lies the first free territory of the Americas, predating Washington—across all the Americas—and there I take refuge in its African chants.
My land is one of goldsmithing that existed in the age of the Egyptian pharaohs and of the world’s earliest artists in Chiribiquete.
You will never dominate us. Standing in your way is the warrior who rode through our lands shouting “Liberty!”—his name is Bolívar.
Our people are somewhat fearful, somewhat timid—naive, kind, and amorous—but they will reclaim the Panama Canal, which you stole from us through violence. Two hundred heroes from across Latin America lie buried in Bocas del Toro (now Panama, once Colombia), murdered by your hands.
I raise a banner, and as Gaitán said: Even if I stand alone, it will remain hoisted with Latin American dignity—the dignity of America, which your immigrant ancestor never knew, but mine did, Mr. President of the U.S.
Your blockade does not frighten me, for Colombia, beyond being a land of beauty, is the heart of the world. I know you love beauty as I do—do not disrespect it, and it will offer you its sweetness.
COLOMBIA, AS OF TODAY, OPENS ITS ARMS TO THE WORLD. WE ARE BUILDERS OF LIBERTY, LIFE, AND HUMANITY.
I am informed that you impose a 50% tariff on the fruits of our labor to enter the U.S.—I will do the same.
Let our people sow the corn discovered in Colombia and feed the world.”
