@poperespecter1@gavinortlund So you’re saying the whole claim of apostolic succession regarding the papacy hinges on the testimony of Irenaeus being accurate, a man writing from Lyon over a hundred years after the death of Peter and Paul? Fascinating….
@poperespecter1@gavinortlund Also, you do know that Irenaeus’ list (claiming Linus was the first Roman bishop) is at odds with Tertullian who claimed Clement was the first, while Eusebius claims Linus was the third bishop? Seems like an area where it would be pretty important to have clarity.
@poperespecter1@gavinortlund Yes, because First Clement clearly references a council of elders in Rome, not a singular bishop. Further, Ignatius’ early 2nd century letter to Rome also does not address a singular bishop, as all of his other letters do.
@poperespecter1@gavinortlund The absence of what, mate? The Irenaeus passage you are quoting does not make the case for papal supremacy. Also, it’s a 45 minute YouTube video, not a university course on the history of the papacy, so he couldn’t possible cover every piece of early church history on the matter.
@poperespecter1@gavinortlund “None of us may set himself up as bishop of bishops, nor compel his brothers to obey him; every bishop of the Church has full liberty and complete power; as he cannot be judged by another, neither can he judge another.”
-Cyprian of Carthage, 257.
@poperespecter1@gavinortlund Because he has already addressed it several times earlier and, moreover, it doesn’t say what you think it does (e.g., you ought to learn the distinct between Roman primacy and Roman supremacy).
