When you travel across Western Uganda, almost every trading centre has a well-facilitated SACCO office. During the presidential campaign rallies in the region, it was common to hear people thanking the President for the billions of shillings allocated to their SACCOs and requesting an additional five billion or more to help them achieve their goals.

For anyone attending those rallies who did not belong to the region’s indigenous tribes, it often felt unbelievable, almost like a joke. But I can tell you, we truly live in very different worlds within the same Uganda.

Take a walk around Mbarara and you will find branches of SACCO offices from various districts across the Ankore sub region. Many of these offices are so impressive that they look more like commercial banks than SACCOs.

So, to those who thought they were part of the ruling system, keep dreaming 😩
