Basics of Open Fractures

Training healthcare workers to improve open fractures for everyone in the world - a BASICS of Global Surgery initiative 🌍

[Dr. Kayondo Derick. @DerickKayondo]

It was a great time at the @OrthoSocietyUg 18th Annual Scientific conference at Hotel Bamus Sarovar Portico yesterday.
I talked about the invaluable role of Orthoplastic surgery in care for our patients. To seal it off, I made a case report presentation on one of the many patients we have restored hope and mobility for through Orthoplastics approach.

Why do we call it the Basics of Open Fractures?

Sometimes, improving patient care starts with going back to the basics, even when advanced resources aren’t available.

Dr. @DerickKayondo explains why getting the fundamentals right matters.

[Mulago National Referral Hospital @MulagoReferral]

The free Orthoplastic Camp held @MulagoReferral from 7th–8th October marked a significant milestone, with seven patients benefiting from complex, limb-saving surgical interventions.

The camp brought together orthopaedic & plastic surgeons to manage severe trauma, including complex open fractures.

Orthopaedic surgeons reconstructed & stabilised the bone, while plastic surgeons managed the surrounding soft tissues—demonstrating the power of multidisciplinary care.

Beyond surgery, the camp strengthened local surgical capacity through knowledge exchange and skills transfer.

Huge thanks to Global Surgery Amsterdam, Interplast Netherlands & the entire surgical team for helping give patients a second chance at mobility and independence.

This is more than surgery. It is limb salvage. It is hope. It is a second chance.

Injuries kill more people each year than HIV, TB and malaria combined. Most in low- and middle-income countries.

Open fractures are a big part of it. Young people, often the breadwinners of their family. Late care, infection, a leg that never heals.

That's why we're here.
