OVULATION
Ovulation is a key part of the menstrual cycle, but its importance goes beyond just releasing an egg. It plays a major role in fertility, pregnancy, and even overall health. Thread 🧵
A team of scientists from the Coffee Research Institute of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO - CRI) conducted a week-long Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop under the Food Systems Resilience Project (FSRP) to equip agricultural extension officers from Laikipia County with practical skills that are required in the coffee value chain. The team was led by CRI's Deputy Institute Director, Dr. Tony Maritim, who outlined the Institute's mandate and highlighted CRI's contribution to supplying quality planting materials by supplying over 5000kgs of seeds equivalent to 15 million seedlings to traditional and emerging coffee belts. He further emphasized CRI's strategic focus on increasing coffee production in emerging coffee-growing regions through seed and seedling production and training.
In his opening remarks, the KALRO’s Director - Crop Systems, Dr. Benjamin Kivuva, underscored the importance of strengthening research-extension-farmer linkages, promoting clean planting materials, supporting farmer cooperatives, and ensuring that the knowledge gained during the workshop is cascaded to farmers. The training addressed Laikipia's shortage of quality planting materials by strengthening participants' capacity in nursery establishment, canopy management, crop nutrition, and value addition while promoting suitable coffee varieties through demonstration plots established by KALRO-CRI. Speaking on behalf of the trainees, Edward Njuguna affirmed that the skills acquired would enable extension officers to support farmers in establishing healthy coffee plantations and managing the crop during the critical first three years.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, KALRO Deputy Director General – Crops, Dr. Alice Murage emphasized the importance of the ToT model in accelerating the adoption of research-based coffee technologies and strengthening the link between research and extension services. She challenged the trainees to cascade the knowledge and skills acquired to farmers across Laikipia County, noting that wider adoption of improved agronomic practices, quality planting materials, and value addition technologies will enhance coffee productivity, improve farmer incomes, and position Laikipia as one of Kenya's promising new coffee-growing frontiers.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Charles Lung'aho from the FSRP National Project Coordination Unit, commended the participants for their commitment throughout the training and underscored the strategic importance of empowering extension officers as the critical link between research and farmers. He noted that strengthening extension capacity is essential not only for transforming coffee production in Laikipia but also for advancing Kenya's national agenda of building a resilient, competitive, and sustainable coffee sector.
