United need a ‘TACTICAL CULTURE RESET’ not just an attitude one.

Most if not every major team in Europe that plays a stylish brand of football with high level of field tilt, pressing and composed possession with a high degree of press resistance has some trace of Spanish/Dutch DNA that is linked to Cruyff in some way. German influence also felt since the 2010s.

Manchester United have been avoiding this to their detriment. Hence every match feels like a firefight and they seem to perform better in big games where they can play like the underdog.

Ten Hag was meant to bring this to United but instead he starting embracing chaos ball, absorbing United’s inherent tactical values ie some mythical ‘United Way’ and we resembled a British Sunday League side and looked nothing like his super sexy Ajax side.

Long ago Van Gaal was a pivot point for Manchester United and probably the closest we got to modernising and joining the rest of the elite from a possession idea point of view but the problem was he was outdated even within that school of football and also famously he wasn’t a huge fan of Cruyff… so we never really absorbed the ideas and let it set a foundation for others to follow.

My biggest concern when we appointed Amorim was he didn’t fit into the possession style of football that we associate with most of the elite sides - he was all about verticality, transitions but none of the pausa … didn’t focus on quality control of the midfield region and once again United find themselves in fire fights in every game.

Unless United embrace the modern game and bring a collection of thinkers who are well versed in the Cruyffian model and dedicated to implementing a cutting edge version of it, they’re always going to play catch up and be left behind because even sides like Brighton have superior awareness of modern possession principles.
