Тепер трохи математики. Конституція Орлика з'явилася за 77 років до Конституції США. За 81 рік до конституцій Польщі та Франції. Коли в Європі ще панував абсолютизм, українці вже прописували поділ влади, обмеження повноважень гетьмана, незалежний суд і права козацтва. Не як подарунок від монарха — як договір вільних людей зі своєю владою.

Це і є відповідь усім «експертам», які досі розповідають про Україну як про «young nation», що «раптово виникла у 1991 році». Ні, панове. Нація, яка 316 років тому писала одну з перших конституцій у світі, не може бути молодою.

І саме тому Москва століттями нищила нашу пам'ять — палила архіви, забороняла мову, переписувала історію. Бо імперії було життєво необхідно, щоб ��віт вважав нас «частиною ��осії», а не дорослішою та набагато старшою за неї політичною культурою. І оригінал конституції Орлика вцілів лише тому, що зберігався у Швеції — поза досяжністю імперських рук.

We are grateful to the United States for all the assistance we have received – from Javelins and Patriots to political support – and we deeply value that America stands by us in defending our independence. This year is especially significant as Ukraine marks 30 years since the adoption of its modern Constitution on 28 June 1996—a defining moment in the country’s contemporary history and the legal outcome of centuries of striving for Ukrainian statehood.

Ukraine’s constitutional tradition, however, is much older. In 1710, the Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk set out principles such as the separation of powers, making it one of the world’s earliest democratic constitutional documents.

Ukraine’s modern Constitution enshrines the values that continue to define the country today: human dignity, freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and the right of the Ukrainian people to determine their own future.

Thirty years later, these principles are not only written into law—they are being defended every day by Ukrainians.

We also recognise the important contribution of the Ukrainian diaspora, whose legal scholars and experts helped shape Ukraine’s Constitution during the country’s path to independence.

On Constitution Day, we celebrate not only a legal document, but a centuries-long tradition of democratic thought and the enduring belief that every nation has the right to choose its own future.

Today the flags fly at half-mast.

On the night of 14 June 1941, doors were knocked in the dark across Estonia. Mothers were given minutes. Children clutched whatever they could carry. More than 10,000 people — among them infants and the elderly — were loaded into cattle wagons and sent east, into the cold, into silence. Men were torn from their families and sent to camps from which most never returned.

They committed no crime. Their only offense was being Estonian, being educated, being landowners, being someone the regime decided to erase.

We lower our flags today not out of habit, but out of memory. For the empty chairs at kitchen tables. For the letters that stopped coming. For the graves that have no markers in the Siberian earth.

A nation that forgets its grief forgets itself. So we remember. We say their names. We teach our children why this day is quiet.
