On May 13, 2025, former Uruguayan president José Mujica, known worldwide as Pepe Mujica, died at the age of 89. Mujica was far greater than the office he held. His trajectory marked the history of Latin America through courage, resistance, and an endless struggle for social justice.

At a young age, he began his political life in the traditional National Party. However, faced with the deep social inequalities of Uruguay, he broke with the limits of traditional politics and helped found the National Liberation Movement – Tupamaros (MLN-T) in the 1960s. The urban guerrilla group carried out armed actions and expropriations aimed at redistributing food and resources to the poor during a period of growing repression and social crisis.

During the Uruguayan military dictatorship, Mujica was shot, persecuted, and imprisoned. He spent around 15 years in prison, much of that time under inhumane conditions, subjected to extreme isolation and torture, and used as a “hostage” by the military, who threatened to execute him if the guerrillas resumed their activities. He also took part in historic prison escapes during the dictatorship, becoming a symbol of revolutionary resistance across the continent.

With the end of the dictatorship and the 1985 amnesty, Mujica returned to public life. Alongside other former guerrillas, he chose to continue the political struggle through institutional politics within the Movement of Popular Participation (MPP), part of the left-wing coalition Frente Amplio. He became a deputy, senator, minister, and later president of Uruguay between 2010 and 2015.

Even though he abandoned the revolutionary path in his later years and followed the road of institutional democracy, Pepe Mujica never stopped representing, for millions of people, the dignity of those who fight for a more just world. His simplicity, consistency, and defense of human solidarity crossed borders and inspired generations.

El futbol es un deporte popular, el más visto por las masas y siempre va a estar mezclado con la política. Me posiciono junto a Josep Guardiola, es una contradicción hasta insultante tener una voz tan alta y no pronunciarte frente a la injusticia. La historia los juzgará.
