“The Prussians came up with the system in order to create loyal soldiers and civil servants.”
After Bismarck unified Germany under Prussia in 1871, the state brought in compulsory education with two tracks: work for the government or become a soldier. Austria’s Kaiser Franz Joseph adopted it, and the model spread to schools across Europe, the US and Asia.
Germany still calls its secondary schools gymnasiums, the name Prussia made famous, and @leonwankum argues school today still trains loyalty to the state over independent thinking.
The modern classroom was built for Prussia’s army and bureaucracy.
