In 2012, I started getting into Bitcoin and especially Litecoin. At the time, CPU mining on Bitcoin was already too late, you needed GPUs. Which I didn't have. So I turned to Litecoin. With an algorithm made to resist to GPU mining, CPU mining was viable.

While playing around with Litecoin was fun, if you wanted to have a playground that wasn't anchored in valuable coins, you could use the testnet, but that was boring to me.

So I set out to create a clone of Litecoin, to have fun with and play around the internals. Do some mining and trade with friends.
I named it BBQCoin and basically forked Litecoin's source code and changed the name of Litecoin from the code to BBQCoin, and changed some ports for the communication between nodes.

The genesis block was the hardest to build. I tried to obtain some help online but nobody was willing to really help me in the Bitcoin/Litecoin community.
Some people thought that if you didn't know how to do it, you shouldn't start a new coin.

Basically, at the time, all coins were somewhat based on Bitcoin, and they all brought something new. A new feature, or something that would set it apart and justify the new/alternative coin. Litecoin was the mining algorithm.

I just wanted a fun little thing, not compete. But a lot of folks didn't like that. More on that later.

So I managed to get the genesis block, and finally made it work. I posted it on Bitcointalk (https://t.co/fIPbC0GrIt)

At first some people were into it, but quickly came the accusations of me trying to do a rugpull. Some people jumped in thinking they could make money from it. Then some people organised a 51% attack on the network, which is one of the few vulnerabilities of Bitcoin based coins. It allowed them to control the blockchain and do whatever they wanted with it. Everyone went away saying that it was done and gone and over.

Since I was only doing this for fun, I didn't understand all of this sudden attention and hate. I went to defend myself on the forums and was really cringy about it, being 16 at the time.
I could have just kept with BBQCoin, but my original goal was basically done, I made what I wanted to do, did some mining by myself all alone on a blockchain I was the only one in. So I kind of left everything, and even the whole Bitcoin and Litecoin interest and community.

I never thought anything about it.

Then I was contacted by the Wall Street Journal for an interview about BBQCoin. Some people kind of resurrected it and kept it going, but I had moved on to my studies and wasn't interested. I was mostly not interested in going back into a community that was so hostile to me at the time.

I did get a paper copy of the journal article, which was really fun!

Now, the coin has been resurrected on Solana with the CA 33cjJr5CWcJ3mxUvQP6z8JgAofumGDLFgLqUtq9Cpump

I am getting the fees and already used them to buyback and lock 6% of the supply for a year.
