Brenda Chisholm-Beaton - Port Hawkesbury Mayor, Business owner: Fleur-de-Lis Tea Room and Dining Room, Mom/Wife, Volunteer, Teacher,Proud Cape Bretoner!
Thank you @StevenMGoogoo for this beautiful “orange shirt” beaded pin - I wear it solemnly to honour the memory of thousands of children who didn’t return from residential schools across the Country & in resolve that every child matters. Thank you for your leadership always.
Thanks to Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship @SeanFraserMP for meeting with FCM members from rural and mid-size communities this afternoon. As #CDNmuni continue to welcome newcomers to their communities in the coming years, it is vital that local government expertise and perspectives continue to be included in decision making. Together we develop the inclusive and dynamic communities that make Canada such an appealing destination for immigrants from around the world.
Local governments are dealing with 2023 challenges with a funding model from 1849 that was never designed to handle the demands of 21st century life in Canada. It’s time for a new Municipal Growth Framework—a revenue tool that grows with the economy, and a redefining of the way we engage across orders of government. #CDNMuni
In recent decades, municipalities have taken on new responsibilities in health, social services, housing and economic development. And longstanding #CDNmuni responsibilities like policing, waste management and water and wastewater services are becoming more complex due to challenges linked to mental health, homelessness and climate change. It’s time for a new Municipal Growth Framework—a revenue tool that grows with the economy, and a redefining of the way we engage across orders of government.
From housing to a growing mental health crisis, #CDNmuni are on the frontlines of Canada’s national challenges, but with an outdated revenue system that is not designed to best meet them. It’s time for a new Municipal Growth Framework—a revenue tool that grows with the economy, and a redefining of the way we engage across orders of government.
Across Canada, diversity of thought, language and identity are crucial factors that help create the dynamic and growing communities that FCM and our #CDNmuni members are committed to fostering. As Canada continues to grow, evolve and diversify, we want to use this opportunity on Canadian Multiculturalism Day to reaffirm our collective commitment to building welcoming and inclusive communities, free from any form of prejudice or discrimination, for all. #MultiDay

@ICLEI_canada
Today is ‘Clean Air Day’ in Canada.
This morning I had to mask up my kids this time because the smoke is so thick.
If you want to reply that it’s just a fire and unrelated to climate change go ahead, but I’ll be here, broken hearted and doubling down on the work to address it.
From coast to coast to coast, my @FCM_online colleagues joined a quick photo representing every province and territory. Privileged to be in such great company. This is what women in politics across Canada looks like right here 👇#FCM2023AC
