“Norms of whiteness” that influence hiring decisions. It’s important to have library workers that look like and talk like our communities, but there’s a privilege of whiteness in representations and visions of libraries that impact hiring.
how do we slow down to bring people along to the importance of what we’re doing, while recognizing the urgency of these changes for the people who are forced to endure marginalizing and oppressive systems?
Some people don’t want to bring their personal politics to their workplace — but they are still bringing their personal privileges and promoting systems that are political.
Some people see libraries as neutral and librarians as neutral. @mchris4duke says that’s not only not true, it’s not desirable. We are constantly making decisions — from work spaces to public spaces, programming, communications & collections — these are not neutral. #BCLC2018
