When James Mtume passed on January 9, it took a mapmaker to craft an obit. Wax Poetics spoke with three musicians/composers with whom Mtume played, on their records and his, each with their own funny and frank visions of what their friend, meant to them.

Another bomb from the vaults. Street Time presents the unsung rhythmic soul behind Miles's improvisational funk.
Essential reading. Live now.

We lost one of the greatest Drummer that ever played with James Brown. Mr. Melvin Parker, brother to Maceo Parker. In 1964 Melvin played on three of Brown's recordings: "Out of Sight," "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," and "I Got You (I Feel Good). Condolences to the Parker family🙏
When I was in my early 20s I used to call Greg Tate on a Friday or Saturday night with nothing to say and he’d just talk for 2-3 hours and he was mentoring me without overtly mentoring, I would just ask him about writing and music and culture and just trry to soak in his genius.
Papa Greg Tate has joined the ancestors. The Godfather of hip-hop criticism. An expansive, gentle soul. His only violence was intellectual. (& it was beautiful & most of them folks deserved it!) He taught me/all of us so many things about so many things. Thank you, Greg.
It's almost Fathers Day. Rather than celebrating, I will spend Fathers Day working to prevent other dads from losing children to gun violence. I need your help sending a message to DC. Let's make #DadsForGunSafety the biggest # of all time with 1,000,000 RT's. Let's do this.
