My music teachers didn’t just teach me how to play the saxophone. They taught me to believe in myself. They taught me the importance of hard work. They taught me the joy of working with other people. They taught me that when you reach for the stars, your life gets brighter.

Not everyone gets a mark for band, or for choir, or for orchestra. Having said that, being in music ensembles leaves an indelible mark on the lives of so many people. A mark so significant that it long outlasts and long outweighs any of the marks we get at school. Value music.

Music doesn’t get in the way of learning. Music is an incredible form of learning, an inspiring form of learning, and a holistic form of learning. It isn’t the poor cousin of any other subject. Music is a vital component of a holistic, meaningful, and successful education.

Music is misunderstood at the peril of education more broadly. It’s often seen as easy - it isn’t. It’s often seen as not being academic - it is. It’s often seen as not leading to substantive careers - it does. Not only this, it educates young people like nothing else can.

Stop making excuses for your kids.
STOP IT.
Teach them to earn things, not demand things.
Hold them to a higher standard.
Challenge them.
That way, when I try to challenge them, they’ll know we both expect it.
