Last night I attended the Will Richter Memorial Bike Ride, which was held under the auspices of Critical Mass. Disappointingly, there was NO Victoria Police presence to assist in ensuring the safety of attendees!! @rhi_stevens @MarkDreyfusKCMP @paul4frankston @_CatherinTaylor

The circumstances surrounding the collision are disturbingly similar to those of endurance cyclist Mike Hall. In that instance, the AFP investigation was hopelessly inept & the driver wasn't charged.

If cycling advocacy organisations that claim to be advocates for cyclists were actually advocating for all cyclists, not just those who ride on bike paths, there would be no need for a private organisation like the Amy Gillette Foundation, as fantastic as its work on a minimum passing distance was. It highlights the huge need for current organisations to change the way they are ignoring the vast majority of cyclists who need to ride on roads for commuting, transport, recreation and sport. We are calling for a major change: no more ignoring the majority of cyclists who must, need and choose to cycle on roads in Australia. It is incomprehensible how this culture of ignoring road cycling has been allowed to fester in our major member-based cycling organisations. If we want to increase cycling, we must make cycling safer on our roads.

It’s hard to comprehend how organisations that claim cyclist safety is central to their mission can remain almost silent while Australia is facing a growing cycling injury crisis.
Over the past three years, cyclist injuries and deaths have continued at deeply concerning levels across the country, yet there has been little visible urgency, leadership, or national campaigning from many of our major cycling organisations.
If this level of road trauma were occurring in almost any other sport or activity, there would be outrage and constant public discussion.
The “don’t mention the war” approach is no longer defensible. Australian cyclists deserve stronger advocacy, stronger leadership, and far greater accountability. 🚴‍♂️⚠️
