Love this new @CGDev blog by @BeaCichocka & @GavasMikaela about how donors need to shift in this new aid landscape. They won't be able to do everything, everywhere, so seems particularly sensible to focus on clarifying and enforcing comparative advantage.

🧵China doesn’t track its climate finance, but is it a major player anyway? Its climate contributions total a massive $3 billion a year.
@BeaCichocka and @EconMitch explore how that compares to what the US has done over the years #COP29 ⬇

In his speech today at #COP29 in Baku, #China's Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang stated, "Since 2016, China has provided and mobilized project funds of more than 177bn RMB ($24.5bn), strongly supporting other developing countries in addressing #climatechange." 🧵

Pulling apart the most obvious RU info op to date (as we did using semantic modelling), very clear it is targeting BRICS, Africa, Asia. Not the West really at all.
Still, how a future effectiveness agenda should address all of the concerns expressed, and how far political will to renew extends remains unclear. In response, we propose 4 scenarios, each involving its own set of trade-offs. Summary in our blog: https://t.co/Csg8DFMMb5

There’s no difference between a refugee from Syria or Afghanistan or Ukraine or El Salvador. They’re all people literally running for their lives. We have room for all of them.
Papers linked above estimate the economic costs of an embargo on Russian gas for various European countries (spoiler: much lower than COVID) - interested in other views though? https://t.co/HsCkNENTaT
Over €4B transferred via Germany to Russia since the start of the war in fossil fuel imports.
To compare, the US military aid package to Ukraine has been $1B and the EU's €500 million.
