PS I suspect I know why. We have a system spectacularly bad at dealing with the mental health problems that drive people to crisis, also leading to homelessness, addiction, crime and unemployment. People jumping on the line is a grim downstream consequence of that failure

The point is that if these rules are not complied with you end up with a system where the self interest of morally questionable billionaires takes precedence over people who can't get a GP appointment or afford to heat their home. THAT'S WHY YOU NEED TO FOLLOW THE RULES GUYS

OK what is a little frustrating about some commentary on this brilliant investigation is that its very much about 'the rules' & less about the 'so what'. The rules exist to stop elected politicians being subservient to anonymous wealthy overlords. That's why this is reprehensible

When we published 'Making the grade' 2 years ago, arguing Whitehall largely ignores poor performance, we had an outpouring from civil servants of 'thank god someone is saying this'

As a Labour member, one of my more controversial views is that this hour counting culture is ridiculous. Commitment to campaigning matters but it can inadvertently reward those with the most spare time, not the most capability. It's just not an effective recruitment strategy

@whitleysnumber2 100%. I get that this culture does help to incentivise a permanent set of ‘boots on the ground’ but it does raise a question as to how much ‘boots on the ground’ meaningfully changes outcomes… I feel like we just accept it MUST be impactful because that’s how it’s always worked

I also don't think people should be expected to make that trade off. I think it's completely reasonable for someone to have a sincere ambition to become an MP, while wanting to spend their evenings and weekends with their children or their friends. That's not disloyal to Labour

The opportunity cost of this culture is unfathomable to me. God knows how many exceptionally capable people, with well evidenced careers in public service, have forgone the selection process because campaigning is unfeasible for them
