In Kaikai's world, anything and everything has the potential to be a toy. Even a spade.

For context: Kaikai is less than a year old. She is also, by unanimous Keeper agreement, the most curious elephant at Kaluku. If anything, it's her world – and we just live in it. Early on, cardboard boxes were her absolute favourite toys. She'd kick them like a football, don them like a hat, and in the grand finale, flop atop them and take great delight when they collapsed. She's moved on to other things now – namely a tyre that she treats as a throne, a pillow and a plaything.

In March 1987, a two-week-old elephant calf was rescued in northern Kenya. He arrived sunburnt and emaciated – and so young that round-the-clock care in the Sheldrick family home wasn't going to be enough. So Daphne built him a stable in Nairobi. The very first one.

If the orphans had their way, they'd be in charge of our hiring process. And, actually, they are! When new Keepers join on a trial basis, we watch and wait – if they are embraced by the elephants, we know the herd has given their seal of approval.
