A little backstory on how Backpack got his name!

Backpack earned his name as a first-year spring cub back in 2006. Whenever his mother swam across the deep rushing currents of the Brooks River, Backpack would climb directly onto her back to hitch a piggyback ride.

The habit became even more vital in 2007 when he endured a severe paw and leg injury. Because he couldn't put weight on his leg, his mother protected him and carried him like a "furry knapsack" while he healed.
