1/8 - Double-landlocked 🇺🇿

Uzbekistan is set to become the first double-landlocked country - meaning neither it nor its neighbours have a coastline - to play at the World Cup.

There are actually only two double-landlocked countries in the entire world. The other one is Liechtenstein, a micro-state of 40,000 people that is unlikely to qualify in the foreseeable future.

2/8 - Coastline champions 🇨🇦

Canada, meanwhile, has the longest coastline of any country on the planet - and by extension, any participant at the World Cup - at 243,042km.

The co-hosts are in a group with Bosnia & Herzegovina, who have the shortest coastline of any non-landlocked country at the tournament (20km), narrowly edging out Jordan (26km) and DR Congo (37km).

3/8 - No neighbours ❌

On the topic of Bosnia & Herzegovina, their qualification at the expense of Italy means that there are no World Cup group-stage match-ups between countries that share a border.

Had Italy qualified, they would have been in a group with northern neighbours Switzerland, with whom they share a border of approximately 750 kilometres.

4/8 - Continental clashes 🇪🇺

Due to the number of participating countries from Europe, UEFA is the only continental confederation that can have more than one representative per group.

New Zealand, who are making their third World Cup appearance after 1982 & 2010, are the only representative of Oceania at the finals. Every other continent has at least six representatives.

Australia are part of Oceania in geographic terms, but the Socceroos switched their continental allegiance from OFC to AFC in 2006 and are now considered to be part of Asia in footballing terms.

Timewise, no participating country will be further ahead of the kick-off of their team than New Zealand, who are almost a full day ahead of California 🇺🇸 & Vancouver 🇨🇦 where their matches take place.

With the time in the host venues at GMT -7 and in New Zealand at GMT +12, there will be a 19-hour difference between the two locations!

There will be five island nations at the 2026 World Cup: 🇦🇺 Australia (often regarded as a continental landmass itself but also a single-country island), 🇨🇻 Cape Verde, 🇨🇼 Curaçao, 🇯🇵 Japan & 🇳🇿 New Zealand.

Meanwhile, both 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England & 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland count if you include shared islands, as does 🇭🇹 Haiti, which shares Hispaniola with 🇩🇴 Dominican Republic.

While England and Scotland are constituent countries within the United Kingdom, Curaçao is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Excluding the nations that make up the UK, Curaçao is the first non-fully independent national team to take part in a World Cup finals since the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia, participated in 1938.
