My opinion is that the dome is 75 miles high at the North Pole beneath Polaris, and then declines to the outer border of the earth's circle. Earth is a flat circular plane, and the ice of antarctica forms the outer border of the circle and holds the oceans in their container. The water of the dome is much different than our earth water.

The sprites are somehow generated at the dome and sent down to the clouds as electrical discharge. When a sprite lights up the sky, the dome is visible momentarily
