We are appalled and horrified by the recent outbreak of overtly racist violence aimed at vulnerable migrants and people of colour. What’s even more appalling to us is that this violence has been whipped up and encouraged by cynical corrupt politicians and online grifters…(ctd)
Worse still is that this time producers are using a person of colour for this appalling erasure, which indicates an intention to box-tick and tokenise rather than be truly inclusive. (P7)
*** New series of Sandokan with Bornean lead character refuses to cast South East Asian actors ***
Lazy casting of ESEA stories has yet again reared its head in the latest TV adaptation of Sandokan, a story set in Borneo about a pirate of Dayak heritage.
(P1)
This failure to use Southeast Asian male actors for roles such as the swashbuckling charmer Sandokan also continues the tradition of desexualising ESEA men and using the outdated practice of yellowface, dressing non-ESEAs in costume to impersonate East and Southeast Asians. (P6)
