Thousands of people in the surrounding areas are now afraid to go to parks with their children because of needles and being harassed. We don’t answer our doors anymore.

You can say what you want about Robert Pearce, but he is a relentless advocate for the voices of the people. His commitment to democracy is clear, as he fights for what the majority in our community believe: that Fairhaven Shelter should go.

The reality is stark. The city has stripped away our democratic rights, making decisions with our hard-earned tax dollars without considering our safety. Our property taxes in Ward 2 and 3 have been funneled into projects like the new arena—a venture marred by wasteful spending (remember the overpriced cake?)—while our safety has been compromised. This wasn't a coincidence. The plan was to move the homeless to Fairhaven and erect a monument (downtown Arena) to the city's elite, assuming we wouldn’t notice or care.

But Robert Pearce did notice, and he has taken action. A passionate resident turned politician, Robert is committed to removing the shelter in a way that is both respectful and compassionate, with a plan in place for those who are vulnerable.

It’s been a week and the murderer has not been found.

We said this was going to happen and we lost one of our own.

Shut the shelter down. 24/7 police presence needed until the shelter is gone!

The apathy City Council has, along with the rest of the city, has towards Wards 2 and 3 as well as the Homeless is so negligent and damaging to lives of thousands of people.

Add to it, the legal liability to the City is growing, and smart councillors would figure it out it would be a lot cheaper for them to make massive changes to the shelter or close it, because it is causing way more harm than helping, and no community is going to accept a shelter now that a murder has happened in Fairhaven, and by an elementary school no less!

There is so much evidence that crime, especially violent crime, in our communities has radically increased since the shelter opened, so it's clear the shelter has drawn crime to our community! It's time for radical reduction to 30 beds and a change of operator, or a structured closure, and that time is now!

I'm utterly heart broken and incredibly angry over the events of today in our community. As friends of the family have now shared the details in social media, we've come to learn that a 66 year old man from our community was senselessly beaten in an elementary school parking lot. While he survived long enough for assistance to come, he succumbed to his injuries just a few hours later in hospital.

What we come to learn is he had a morning routine, much like any of us. He walked early in the morning to 711 to get something cold to drink. I can't help but think this is really no different than my routine with my kids, as we often walked to the 711 in the past 21 years we have lived here to get a slurpee or a treat.

But this morning, all that ended, and his family and friends are left in utter shock and dismay at the randomness of this violent attack that took someone they love!

There will undoubtedly be more to say about the unsustainable situation in Fairhaven in the days to come, but let's focus on the 2 most important things right now:

The first is supporting the family and friends of this man. Their shock and grief must be immense, and I offer myself in any way I can to help them because they are a part of our community!

The other is helping the Police any way possible! The Major Crimes Unit has taken over and they have committed all the resources possible to solving this case, but they need our help! If you know anything, saw anything or heard anything between 5am and 7am Wednesday morning, even if you think it may be irrelevant, call it in and let the Police determine what is relevant as any lead could make their case easier to solve!

Otherwise, please take care and be vigilant in every way possible, and please look in on your neighbour and make sure they are okay. We still have a great community because the people in it are great, so let's make sure that greatness never fades!
