Stay away from boxes (unless you're moving house)

There’s so much outdated narrative around working towards a specific defined career goal and having a grand, say, 5-year plan.

This is linear thinking and a form of prediction. The system we find ourselves in is far too open and prone to changes beyond our control and influence to predict with any significant accuracy.

A better strategy is to have optionality and a high degree of openness, preparing yourself for 2nd and 3rd order effects.

Give yourself space to flex

We often start out with great ideas but in creating grand plans and long-term goals, we end up creating such a rigid script to follow — obsessing over our desired outcome — that the process itself loses all joy.

We ultimately trap ourselves and prevent creative exploration, missing out on the unexpected, the unknown -- and the random.

The contrast is having a loose idea that seems promising, but without action, direction, and experimentation it fails to develop into anything meaningful.

Have a direction of travel

The solution is to have a direction and adopt a bias-to-action approach, allowing room for iteration — putting yourself in open spaces and giving yourself optionality.

You always want open space to explore, allowing yourself the opportunity to direct the situation (as much as it is possible) whilst leaving room for — and accepting — the likelihood of unexpected and random events.

The magic thing is that this strategy helps co-create unexpected and random opportunities.

We just need to be mindful and on the lookout for these when they present themselves!
