the thing we love about this movie is that it sort of like. fractures your brain, to see it all laid out like that. mirror into a mirror into a mirror of the soul.
Not even close. Alex Cox took Universal's money, came to spend it to Nicaragua, which was in active conflict with the country financing the film, and made such an angry statement against the U.S. that it destroyed his career. Where's Iñárritu's risk?
(finally) saw Primetime and beyond how excellent from an acting and cinematography perspective it was, it understands Foucault’s Abnormal Three (monster, masturbator, incorrigible) better than basically any movie I’ve seen that’s leveraged those themes recently.
This exchange blasts through my head as I spend every single day doing interviews and podcast appearances for the new book. "You understand, of course..."
I think it just shows how culture has shifted — in 1964, the choice was essentially TV, movie theaters, or books.
You had a captive audience, and because they had less choice, you could make a DR STRANGELOVE a hit.
Cut to today, and the options are endless, and much lower brow.
When Clive Barker was working on the MUMMY remake for Universal in the early '90s, he had a trans character in the script, and when the studio vetoed it, he pretty much said "I really can't stress how much I don't need to fucking make THE MUMMY" and left.
Good bit in Digger I've seen no one mention yet is the juxtaposition between between the Dr. Ganesh refusing to eat the tuna and Digger enjoying it honestly. He "tries not to" eat tuna, but Digger points out that "trying not to" just means you do it sometimes. Which he then does.
the last thing I’ll say about the critical reception of DIGGER is THE SOCIAL RECKONING will almost certainly be worse and more offensive on an artistic, industrial, and political level and not see nearly the same level of vitriol from the critics.
digger is the movie that dares to say: yes America will bomb ur country and then make a movie about how sad it made them. but it will also make the movie about how much they loved it. the same business will give you american sniper and the hurt locker, both financed by the USarmy
i mean you can also literally see water dripping through the sets. and you hear like loud alarm noises during the monologue section that aren't part of the play
i do not think there's a transsexual woman who doesn't go through castration movie 2 through her life. at the end of the day if you're going on this path one day you will experience absolutely everything depicted in this movie.
The first four hours of castration movie 2 are impossible to look away from for any trans woman who's over like 2 years hrt because this is about You. This happened to You before. This will happen to You again. This film is a documentary and that's why it's so scary.
