I have a story related to the Sarona terrorist attack.
Ten years ago, I was living in Ramat Gan, a suburb of Tel Aviv that pretends to be a city. One evening, I heard a knock on my door. I opened the door and didn't notice my unexpected guest until I looked down as it was young girl with a Little Mermaid nightie and a handful of stuffed animals.
She said she was my neighbor and asked to use my phone to check if her mom was alright because she was concerned about her. I asked the child why she was afraid. She said her mother was in Tel Aviv and there could be terrorists in the city, so she just wanted to make sure everything was fine. She said she was worried each time her mother went to the city ever since she heard her mom was present during the Sarona shooting.
This got me thinking about the little ways in which terrorism affects our lives. All the invisible injuries made each time an idiot pulls a knife, pulls the trigger, detonates a bombs, or rams a crowd waiting for the bus.

With the utmost respect to my Christian friends, if you grow up Jewish, it is genuinely difficult to understand how so many Christians can stay relatively indifferent while Christians are butchered across parts of Africa and the Middle East, yet barely react with the urgency or solidarity you would expect from people watching their own brothers and sisters suffer.

Jews are only around 15 million people worldwide, yet we are raised with a very strong sense of responsibility toward one another. If a Jew is attacked, kidnapped, or in danger anywhere on earth, Jews everywhere feel it immediately. We lose sleep over it. We raise money overnight. We pressure governments. We organize. We lobby. We turn over every stone possible trying to help our people.

That instinct is automatic to us.

The reality, however, is that we are already overwhelmed with our own problems. There are antisemitic attacks, terror attacks, threats, and crises involving Jews daily. We cannot spend all day flooding X with videos of Christian children being slaughtered in Nigeria or Ethiopia trying to convince Christians to care about their own people. We simply do not have the capacity to carry everyone else too.

What makes this even harder for me to understand is that I grew up knowing with absolute certainty that if I were stranded or in danger anywhere in the world, there would be Jews fighting over who gets to help me first.

People say “international Jewry” like it’s some dark conspiracy. Maybe instead of mocking it, learn from it.
