There are some major donors who want to create a fund that could help PCA churches become more established, especially outside the traditional footprint. At this point, it is a matter of creating the legal mechanism to make it possible. It will take some time, but I'm pretty confident that it will happen.
Though the public has recently become acquainted with Ben Sasse’s faith, he and his family have been active participants in presbyterian churches for decades. https://t.co/vQG1I9qAYD
In 2001, the #pcaga passed an overture to mark the 225th anniversary of America's independence. The overture originated from Philadelphia Presbytery, titled "Pray for Religious Liberty."
The overture recommended, "To have a brief season of prayer and thanksgiving at our 29th General Assembly for the freedom of Americans, and for the religious freedom enjoyed by our denomination in the United States of America."
@ChessSpurs That's been my experience too. I'm guessing they thought ruling elders could potentially work a full day on Wed, travel after work to GA, and only take Thursday and Friday off. That's just a guess.
In 2013, a report was presented at #pcaga that proposed the idea of a shortened Assembly, with the overtures committee meeting weeks beforehand (like RPR).
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Metro Atlanta has about 6.5 million residents, making it one of the largest metro areas in the U.S.
Its fast growth has helped it pass Miami and rival Washington, D.C. in the rankings.
Then, the 8th Assembly asked the AC to study a delegated Assembly model. The 9th GA declined to adopt it. TVP sent an overture against the delegated assembly model:
"Be it resolved, that the Presbyterian Church in America retain the 'grassroots' character of its General Assembly, preserving the principle that each local church shall have the right to be represented at the Assembly."
FYI: this is from the minutes of the 4th General Assembly. It's the first time the idea of restructuring the Assembly is referenced.
"The Committee recommends that there be no change of the structure of future Assemblies until the denomination’s membership of churches exceeds 500."
I know churches that are missing from this list that belong on it. We only include churches that submitted their stats.
If a church is missing, it means either a) they didn't submit stats (or left this field blank) or b) submitted after we pulled the data.
FWIW, here is what is in the minutes of #pcaga when joining and receiving occurred:
“Receiving these denominations, the Presbyterian Church in America recognizes the history of the respective denominations as part of her total history and receives their historical documents as valuable and significant material which will be used in the perfecting of the church.”
"Nationally, there are those who thought the PCA would either blow up, split up or dry up. From the vantage point I have enjoyed this past year, let me say with emphasis: As a denomination, we’re here to stay."
From G. Aiken Taylor's report as retiring moderator of #pcaga in 1979
Someone asked if I could tell them where to buy a pair of good chinos. In this thread, I will tell you, but my answer is not simple. On the upside, I think this is a better approach when shopping for clothes and you can apply it to any kind of item. 🧵
Highly recommend listening! Worth every minute. Also, fun to hear Sasse refer to the PCA as his denomination. I believe this is the third reference to the PCA on Douthat's podcast this year.
