On 29 July, I was screened by @NGRSenate as a ministerial nominee of President @MBuhari . It was about 2hrs of healthy interaction with the distinguished Senators. Here, for the records, is the transcript. Hope you’d find it illuminating. https://t.co/QaPFrknxfQ Cc: @SPNigeria
As part of our commitment to promoting the health, fitness and wellbeing of staff to enhance efficiency in emergency management operations, we held our Mid-Year Route Walk earlier today at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Maintaining good physical fitness is essential for emergency responders, whose responsibilities often demand endurance, agility and resilience in responding to disasters and other humanitarian emergencies.
Nigeria continues to experience increasingly frequent and complex disasters, underscoring the need for a coordinated and well-defined framework for relief and rehabilitation interventions. While significant progress has been made in emergency response, the absence of a comprehensive national policy has created gaps in coordination, standards, and implementation.
To address this, NEMA is spearheading the development of the National Policy for Relief and Rehabilitation Intervention (NPRRI) to provide a clear framework for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating relief and rehabilitation efforts nationwide.
Declaring open the National Stakeholders' Workshop on the drafting of this policy, I expressed confidence that the collective expertise of the assembled participants and stakeholders will translate into a policy document that sets a strong and lasting standard for relief and rehabilitation interventions in Nigeria.
Our sincere appreciation goes to the @WBG_Nigeria for its invaluable support in facilitating the development of the important policy and to our development partners and stakeholders for the unwavering commitment which continues to strengthen disaster management and humanitarian response in our country.
Update on Building Collapses in Rivers and Lagos States
Following the activation of a multi-agency search and rescue team to the site of the collapsed six-storey building under construction in PortHarcourt, Rivers State, three persons have so far been rescued and one death recorded.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with teams working tirelessly through the debris to locate any victims who may still be trapped beneath the rubble. Given the unstable condition of the collapsed structure, strict safety protocols are being observed to protect emergency personnel throughout the operation.
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, @SimFubaraKSC, visited the site on Thursday to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the situation, as the state government continues to receive regular briefings on the progress of ongoing operations.
We wish to acknowledge Julius Berger Construction Company for making its heavy-duty crane available to safely dismantle the compromised structure, enabling rescue teams to continue their work more effectively.
In a related development, search and rescue operations at the site of a collapsed three-storey commercial building complex in Alakija, Lagos State, have been concluded. Rubble clearance is now underway, carried out through the joint efforts of CCECC, CRCC, LASEMA, and other partner emergency response agencies.
NEMA remains unwavering in its commitment to disaster response, working toward a safer, more resilient nation.
The nature of risk in Nigeria is evolving rapidly, and our disaster management architecture must evolve with it. Emerging threats, evolving operational realities, and lessons from recent emergencies have made the review of our disaster management guidelines and protocols imperative.
As I declared open the Stakeholders’ Inception Workshop on the Review of the National Disaster Management Framework (NDMF) and the National Disaster Response Plan (NDRP), earlier today, I charged the participants to critically examine the documents with a view to developing frameworks that are more responsive to current realities and aligned with international best practices.
The review provides us with a vital opportunity to improve our early warning and early action systems; address gaps in response structures; integrate emerging risks such as climate change and insecurity; and ensure that vulnerable populations, including persons with disabilities, women, children, and the elderly, are adequately considered in disaster planning and response.
I extend my sincere appreciation to the @WorldBankGroup for its continued partnership and technical support to our agency; the Advocacy for Women with Disability Initiative (AWWDI) for supporting this workshop and promoting inclusive disaster management; and the broader disaster management ecosystem in Nigeria.
We flagged off the distribution of food baskets donated by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (@KSRelief) to 6,000 vulnerable households in Yobe State, in line with the specific operational and accountability standards of the donor, yesterday.
It is worthy of note that KSrelief has donated a total of 24,302 food baskets for direct distribution to vulnerable persons in Yobe, Benue, Anambra, Kebbi and Taraba States.
Over the years, KSrelief has remained a dependable humanitarian partner to Nigeria, consistently supporting vulnerable populations through various relief interventions and technical assistance aimed at strengthening emergency response capacity. Today’s event is yet another demonstration of the enduring humanitarian partnership between our two countries.
I wish to specially appreciate the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Government and people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the management of KSrelief for their generosity, compassion, and continued support to Nigeria.
As the rainy season heightens, I wish to strongly advise residents, community leaders, and local authorities in flood-prone areas to take proactive measures to reduce risks and protect lives.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains committed to improving the welfare of citizens and addressing the vulnerabilities arising from disasters, conflicts, climate-related emergencies, and economic challenges.

I’m pleased to announce that the National Emergency Management Agency has received a donation of specialised communication equipment by satellite internet service provider giant, @SpaceX Starlink, to support emergency response and disaster management operations in Nigeria.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, at an audience in his office following the receipt of the technology, lauded the partnership between Space X and NEMA, and assured the management of SpaceX Starlink, represented by Mr. Peter Kroetger, of efficient and effective use of the donated equipment.
The communication gadgets comprising 91 standard and mini boxes will help address some of the critical communication challenges faced by our agency in managing emergency in underserved and hard-to-reach areas across the country.
We will deploy the equipment to 50 strategic flashpoints across the country, and our command-and-control centre will be re-equipped to improve its emergency intervention operations in the country.
Rainy season is here, and flood risk is real.
The listed Local Government Areas in Bauchi, Ekiti, and Jigawa States fall within the moderate flood-risk zone.
To residents of these communities: stay informed, prepare early, and stay safe.

It was such a pleasure to pay homage to @tundefashola Babatunde Raji Fashola CON SAN, one of our finest mind, astute technocrate, distinguished administrator and vastly experienced. Thank you for opening your doors for us to continue to tap from your reservoir of knowledge..
We were in Calabar yesterday to flag off the 2026 National Preparedness and Response Campaign on Flood Disaster and Related Hazards for the South South geo-political zone.
The exercise, borne out of our agency’s mandate, is aimed at driving early action to prevent, mitigate and respond effectively to the anticipated flooding across the country, particularly in flood-prone communities.
The South-South region remains highly vulnerable to flooding because of its coastal terrain, intense rainfall, recurring river overflows, weak drainage systems, and the growing impact of climate change.
At a strategic meeting with the Governor of the State, Senator Bassey Otu, after the flag-off, I highlighted that the flood vulnerability maps developed by our agency would help guide state and local governments in targeted risk reduction planning.
While commending the State Government for its people-first agenda, I urged the adoption of stronger proactive measures that would ensure efficient flood management in the State, particularly the development and activation of community evacuation plans.
Today, we flagged off the 2026 National Preparedness and Response Campaign on Flood Disaster and Related Hazards, designed to drive early and coordinated action to protect lives and livelinoods during the 2026 rainy season, in Yola, Adamawa State.
The recurrent impact of flooding in Nigeria demands an urgent and collective response. Each year, lives are lost, livelinoods are disrupted, and public and private infrastructure worth billions of Naira are damaged.
According to the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook released by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, 23 states including-the FCT, covering 132 local government areas, fall within high flood risk zones. An additional 148 local government areas across 14 states are classified as moderate risk areas.
In response to these projections, NEMA has developed the 2026 Climate-Related Risk Management, Preparedness, and Mitigation Framework. This framework provides a structured guide for reducing flood impacts nationwide.
Beyond this campaign and in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we are deploying technical teams to all states of the federation for direct communily outreach. These efforts will be supported by State Emergency Management Agencies, Local Emergency Management Committees and community volunteers.
As we consistently emphasize at NEMA, disaster management is everyone's business. Effective response is built on inclusiveness, community participation, and shared responsibility.
I held a strategic meeting with a delegation from the Simulation and Crisis Management Directorate of the Department of State Services led by Mrs. Safiya Yusuf, focused on deepening interagency collaboration for proactive disaster management.
Guided by a shared commitment and unity of purpose, we are joining forces to strengthen disaster preparedness and emergency response nationwide, especially as the rainy season and its associated disaster risks approach.
On this Workers’ Day, I extend my deepest appreciation to every Nigerian worker whose resilience, dedication, and sacrifice keep our nation moving forward.
At NEMA, we especially salute the courage of first responders and volunteers who work tirelessly to safeguard lives during emergencies. Your selflessness embodies the true spirit of service.
Happy Workers’ Day!
Yesterday, we took our disaster prevention sensitization campaign directly into the classrooms, engaging pupils of L.E.A. Primary School, Durumi, Abuja, a continuation of our sustained commitment to entrenching a culture of awareness and safety in the hearts and minds of our children.
Building a resilient nation demands that every citizen, young and old, is informed and equipped to prepare for, mitigate, and reduce the risk of disaster within their respective capacities. Each one of us has a role to play, a habit to unlearn, and a helping hand to offer.
I was particularly impressed by the quality of questions that came from the pupils during our interactive session. Their thoughts renewed my confidence in the capacity of young people to drive meaningful change in their communities, and stood as a proud testament to the dedicated labour of their teachers and parents.
With the rainy season fast approaching, we are intensifying our flood prevention and preparedness efforts to reach every demographic and stratum of society as our goal is to reduce the negative impact of the season to its absolute minimum.
With a deep sense of fulfillment and pride, the National Emergency Management Agency is happy to receive the 2025 Humanitarian Agency of the Year Award conferred on us by Vanguard Newspapers, @vanguardngrnews.
Our efforts at building national resilience that has received resounding applause and recognition would have been impossible without the support of President Bola Tinubu and the dedication of @nemanigeria across the country.
While we extend this honour to all local responders who have risen to emergency occasions in their communities, we reaffirm our commitment to sparing no efforts in discharging our duties.
