My game is not original... but I think that's okay! I'd like to take a moment to talk about all the inspirations and similarities my game has to other great games...
a thread...🧵(1/10)
@CatBurger_XD Tbf I had no idea it was going to gain much traction at all. I was panicking trying to figure out the best way to bounce off of the attention it already had. Also to clarify, it's not a fan game, it's just heavily inspired by it, like what Alan Wake is to Twin Peaks
@VideocultMedia Thank you for making such a special game, I hope it's clear how much it has influenced artists and developers like myself, I can only hope my game spreads that message a little bit further ❤️
@sBald_Cape Yes, absolutely! I omitted them from the thread since besides the glyphs from Fez and hidden mechanic that you simply learn how to use like in Tunic, they didn't have more influence on my game. Though, both HAVE influenced all my art in general, I absolutely owe them respect too
@citrusraptor From what I can tell both Iron Bramble and their previous game Rusted Moss were inspired by Rain World's pixel art, so it makes sense it also reminds you of my game. I haven't gotten to play either but they look awesome as hell, so I'm happy for that similarity
To talk about my game from my personal perspective, IRON SOL is a small project I started because I wanted to finally put something out there, I've spent years on other games, and I was tired of never finishing any of them... (9/10)
The game did grow a bit out of its original scope, I got attached to what I was making a lot more and felt I owed it some more care and effort. After 5 months I managed to get it done. Either way, I hope people appreciate it... (10/10)
Besides these examples, there are many smaller inspirations, ideas and lessons from other games, but they are ones which dont't have a big impact on this project itself, rather my art in general. (8/10)
That being said, I saw The End Is Nigh years ago, I can't deny that it subconsciously affected my game, the idea of a platformer with a unique restricted moveset is most defintely something I partially got from it. I respect it a lot so I hope it's seen that way too (5/10)
(Though, in case of some features of Celeste, I actually intentionally avoided them... Maybe ones which you would think I shouldn't, but it made sense for how IRON SOL actually feels to play. For one, coyote time is not in my game...) (7/10)
My actual platformer inspiration was in fact Celeste! I didn't directly reference any of its mechanics, but the challenge design and overall flow of platforming was strongly inspired by it. Lessons it taught me of game design are present in my game. (6/10)
The other obvious similarity that has been pointed out is The End Is Nigh, which I cannot deny, but is actually unintentional. IRON SOL's character's design was a direct response to Slugcat's design, and the post-apocalyptic theme is also based on RW. (4/10)
If there is a game I should be accused of ripping-off, it's Rain World. If IRON SOL is to be seen as anything, it should be as a love letter to Rain World. I made my game to explore the ideas Rain World inspired me with and to satisfy my longing for more of its aesthetic (2/10)
My intention was not to make another game like Rain World, it's a one of a kind. I wanted to make something unique for myself and other fans of the game, a small project to appreciate the original and to hopefully give others an interesting new experience (3/10)
@forrksie_new The design was made pretty much as a direct homage to slugcats! It ended up landing on a lot of similar ideas and themes, but eventually deviated as I made progress on the game and the story. I will likely talk more about it in later posts about my inspirations and similarities
@vulfdev I've only had one playtester play on Linux, but they had no problem using Proton to run it, I believe it should work as well as typical Gamemaker games run in Proton. I'd love to make a native Linux build too eventually. Thank you for your kind words and support❤️
@forrksie_new Funnily enough I made the design of the creature pretty quick and already in pixel art, so I dont have any concept art besides a super early sprite. Though, there is more up-close art of the creature in the game itself :3
